Deep Convection in the Ocean

چکیده
SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES Issues specific to oceanic deep convection are the relatively strong role of rotation, such that convective Rossby numbers appropriate to the vertical motions may fall below unity; the highly intermittent nature of the forcing, with the strong impulses coming during the passage of atmospheric weather systems; the possible highly localized occurrence of deep convection; and the subsequent spatial redistribution and mixing of convected water by geostrophic mesoscale dynamics, which arise in part from instability of the localized convection regions. Our particular research projects are computational investigations intended to (1) quantify the extent to which penetrative mixing occurs at the base of a rotation convective layer, sharpening the pycnocline and entraining denser fluid from below; (2) determine how space/time intermittence in either the surface buoyancy flux or the pre-existing ocean stratification and circulation relate to the degree of localization of deep convection; and (3) explore the circumstances under which localized converted regions are persistent after the buoyancy forcing abates or undergo erosion through subsequent horizontal mixing and restratification of the gyre interior.

Deep convection in NEMO
Most CMIP5 models unrealistically form Antarctic Bottom Water by open ocean deep convection in the Weddell and Ross Seas. To identify the triggering mechanisms leading to Southern Ocean deep convection in models, we perform sensitivity experiments on the ocean model NEMO forced by prescribed atmospheric fluxes. We vary the ver-5 tical velocity scale of the Langmuir turbulence, the fraction of t...
متن کاملSurprising return of deep convection to the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean in winter 2007--2008
In the process of open-ocean convection in the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean, surface water sinks to depth as a distinct water mass, the characteristics of which affect the meridional overturning circulation and oceanic heat flux. In addition, carbon is sequestered from the atmosphere in the process. In recent years, this convection has been shallow or non-existent, which could be construed as ...
متن کاملIrminger Sea deep convection injects oxygen and anthropogenic carbon to the ocean interior
Deep convection in the subpolar North Atlantic ventilates the ocean for atmospheric gases through the formation of deep water masses. Variability in the intensity of deep convection is believed to have caused large variations in North Atlantic anthropogenic carbon storage over the past decades, but observations of the properties during active convection are missing. Here we document the origin,...
متن کاملThe ocean takes a deep breath.
Deep convection is the major mechanism for replenishing oxygen in the deep interior of the world ocean, and its variability affects the use of atmospheric oxygen to monitor the global carbon cycle. Sensors mounted on autonomous floats allow this episodic breathing of the ocean to be monitored in near real time. The results suggest that the tools are available now to make oxygen a key parameter ...
متن کاملAtlantic Dominance of the Meridional Overturning Circulation
North Atlantic (NA) deep-water formation and the resulting Atlantic meridional overturning cell is generally regarded as the primary feature of the global overturning circulation and is believed to be a result of the geometry of the continents. Here, instead, the overturning is viewed as a global energy–driven system and the robustness of NA dominance is investigated within this framework. Usin...
متن کاملOcean Convective Available Potential Energy. Part I: Concept and Calculation
Thermobaric convection (type II convection) and thermobaric cabbeling (type III convection) might substantially contribute to vertical mixing, vertical heat transport, and deep-water formation in the World Ocean. However, the extent of this contribution remains poorly constrained. The concept of ocean convective available potential energy (OCAPE), the thermobaric energy source for type II and ty...
